Requirements:
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) required a secure solution for centrally issuing over 3.5 million drivers’ licenses annually. The solution needed to allow citizens to apply at over 300 locations throughout the province.
The Ministry required a highly secure and durable driver’s license card to protect the card data. Laser engraving technology was used to personalize the photo, personal data and bar codes on a polycarbonate card.

The Datacard® Solution
Image Capture
Datacard® SecureCapture™ solution provided a secure and durable design housing an 8-migapixel digital camera with a high intensity flash and image capture software. The tower features a secure design with quick set up.
ID Card Printer and Personalization
The document issuance solution included multiple MX6000 systems and an MPR5800 system.
The MX6000 configuration included a controller with Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system, laser engraving modules
using state-of-the-art grayscale laser engraving technology, and solid-state, diode-pumped lasers for a truly compact office environment. In addition, the magnetic Stripe Encoding Module supports ISO, AAMVA and JIS encoding formats and a bar code reader module for auditing protection.
Security Features
The Ontario driver’s license is a polycarbonate card containing unique security features. It includes a lens on which a ghost photo, driver’s license number, signature and date of birth is laser engraved.

The polycarbonate driver’s license combines high-level security features with a durable card, providing the Ontario government with the advanced technology needed for secure identification of its citizens.
